The Alien Fauna was one of multiple projects built for a prop construction class themed around the Star Wars films, led by Pamela Workman at Brenau University. The project had us limited to the films from the original trilogy, we had to choose a location shown in the films and design a piece of alien fauna that could be seen growing there. Our research was a combination of researching the fictional place as well as the real world location in which the scenes were filmed, as the props had to not look out of place amongst the real plants that can be seen in the background of the films. The location used as reference was the moon of Endor, which is where part of Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi takes place. The real world location where it was filmed was Del Norte, California, in the redwood forest there. Using Purple Foxglove and Deer Ferns, which are native to this area, I combined them into one and gave them a more alienate form as well as integrated lights into the flowers to give the appearance of bioluminescence. The plant itself was made of thermoplastics, wire, and airbrushed to give an organic pigmentation to the leaves and flowers.
