The Comm Unit was one of multiple projects built for a prop construction class themed around the Star Wars films, led by Pamela Workman at Brenau University. The objective of the assignment was to build a communications device of our own design, as I had themed two of my previous projects around Mandalorians, I decided to keep on theme by designing a wrist mounted device inspired by Boba Fett’s gauntlets. While the design was created over the course of a week, the prop was built in less than 24 hours, including the 3D modeling and printing of the housing. The green top panel was the circuit board removed from a television remote. and then backlit by LED bars removed from a two Harbor Freight lights and powered by an AA battery pack removed from a set of fairy lights. The front facing light was an LED from a small flashlight. Both the backlighting and flashlight were wired from the battery pack to independent, remote mounted switches shown on the rear portion of the housing. The push button shown was used to toggle the flashlight on and off, while the sliding switch toggled the backlighting and was disguised using a 3D printed cap. This allowed for the two lights to be operated separately from one another while running off of one power source.
